Chantelle Norton is an artist and designer working in a variety of mediums, from painting, drawing, and printmaking to ceramics. She has worked in many fields of design, from textiles and fashion design to product and graphic design. Her whimsical paintings and hand-built ceramics take nature, animals, and mythology as inspiration with explorations into storytelling and memory. Textiles, patterns, and costumes are depicted in her work, reflecting on domesticity, the feminine, and notions of home, subliminally emphasizing a story or theme.
While she has settled in the Lower Hudson Valley and is influenced by its landscape and surroundings, her work is shaped by a childhood moving between Ireland and the United States. This movement back and forth, between countries and cultures, influences her thoughts on home. Where is home? What is home? And the connections with the land and landscapes, conflict, and literally, being conflicted.
Which brings us back to clay. Clay has memory, both literally and metaphorically. That's a lot wedged in right there.
